Westmoreland Historical Comments

Westmoreland was named after the county in England.  The first map below depicts Westmoreland County circa 1810.  The second map shows  Westmoreland County in 1836.

Virginia’s Westmoreland County was founded in 1856 by the House of Burgesses at the Jamestown Settlement.  The rolling fields and forests of Westmoreland (in Northern Virginia) were home to some of America’s most celebrated patriots including James Monroe and George Washington.  Westmoreland, Williamsburg, has no current ties to Westmoreland County but we’re sure Monroe and Washington would have felt at home here.
